5 Best Immersive Projection Art Exhibitions in the UK

L’Atelier des Lumiéres created it (we think?), Emily in Paris brought it to the mainstream and it has not been without controversy in the art world (see here for a very good article on that if you’re interested…)

Yes, it’s projection art exhibitions and love them or hate them, it looks like they’re here to stay for some time.

Here at immersed in we fall into the “when it’s done well, what’s not to love?” camp, we also love that many of these exhibitions are family-friendly, welcoming absolutely all ages.

Here’s our roundup:

1. Mexican Geniuses - London

https://mexicangeniuses.com/london/

See the works of Mexican Geniuses Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera and understand the connections between them in London via immersive art and a VR experience (that costs extra)

This show has got a seal of approval from the Kahlo’s family, who have called it “revolutionary”, which is reassuring.

Mexican Geniuses is on at Dock X, Canada Water, Surrey Quays Rd, London. Tickets start at £19.90 and are available here

2. Machine Memoirs - Coventry

Artist Refik Anadol’s exhibition Machine Memoirs: Space is the product of a long-term collaboration with NASA. It uses artificial intelligence to reimagine two million publicly available images taken by satellite and telescopes, transporting visitors from the centre of Coventry to the deepest regions of outer space.

It is a 360 degree experience that will be held in The Reel Store, the UK’s first dedicated immersive art gallery and possibly the most hotly-anticipated gallery opening of 2022.

Machine Memoirs: Space is on at The Reel Store in Coventry and tickets are available here

3. Monet: The Immersive Experience - York

OK so it hasn’t actually opened yet, but we have it on good authority that Monet: The Immersive Experience will descend on York in the near future.

Can we get an Oooooh?

Our hunch is that it might be when the Van Gogh exhibition ends there, as it’s made by the same company.

We’ll let you know when it opens but in the meantime check out this cool video from the LA edition.

4. Klimt: The Immersive Experience - London

https://klimtexpo.com/

20,000 square ft gallery showing the works of Klimt including The Kiss, Death and Life and The Maiden. It has a VR component (at an extra cost) that guides you through a day in the life of an artist and allows you to discover the inspiration behind 8 of his works.

Klimt: The Immersive Experience is currently showing at The Boiler House in Brick Lane, London, ticket prices start at £19.90 for adults and £11.50 for children and are available here

5. Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience - London, Bristol, Leicester, York (Phew!)

No list would be complete without the Instagram-breaking Van Gogh experience.

Similar to Mexican Geniuses and Klimt (we think made by the same folks…) this has installations, projection, and a VR experience at an extra cost.

Currently on at London, Bristol, Leicester and York, for tickets and details see here
